Matching Matters in 401(k) Plan Participation

چکیده
This study offers new evidence on the effects of the matching contributions made by employers to 401(k) plan accounts on plan participation rates, exploiting microdata from the National Compensation Survey, a large, nationally representative, establishment dataset. It addresses the potential endogeneity of the matching contributions by employing coworker and labor market characteristics as instruments. The results indicate that employer matches have substantial effects. They also indicate that higher match rates tend to be correlated with workers having lower propensities to save; correcting for this endogeneity produces estimates that are bigger than those seen through direct crosssectional comparisons. Acknowledgments: I would like to thank John Bishow, Brandy Dickerson, Mike Lettau, and Erin McNulty for help in understanding and assembling the data; and Al Blostin, Julia Coronado, Maury Gittleman, Mark Loewenstein, Brooks Pierce, and Bill Wiatrowski, and seminar participants at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro and the 2005 AEA-ASSA meetings for helpful comments on earlier versions of this paper.

Participation in voluntary individual savings accounts: an analysis of IRAs, 401(k)s, and the TSP.
New voluntary individual savings accounts have been proposed by some as a part of, or in addition to, Social Security. The success of these proposals would depend greatly on how many workers participate. This paper compares participation rates in three existing voluntary individual account-type plans--Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs), 401(k)s, and the federal Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)--to ...
متن کاملTHE EFFECTS OF 401(k) PARTICIPATION ON THE WEALTH DISTRIBUTION: AN INSTRUMENTAL QUANTILE REGRESSION ANALYSIS
We use instrumental quantile regression approach to examine the effects of 401(k) plans on wealth using data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation. Using 401(k) eligibility as an instrument for 401(k) participation, we estimate the quantile treatment effects of participation in a 401(k) plan on several measures of wealth. The results show the effects of 401(k) participation on net...
متن کاملFree Money? 401(k)s, Vesting, and Unemployment
This paper analyzes the effects of employment risk and vesting rules on the substitution between 401(k)s and conventional savings. Nearly two-thirds of 401(k) plans include vesting rules, which stipulate a partial or complete forfeiture of employer-matched contributions in the event of a job loss that occurs before a service requirement is met. We characterize this risk by simulating a stochast...
متن کاملWhat Can the Life Cycle Model Tell Us About 401(k) Contributions and Participation?
This paper solves and simulates a stochastic life cycle model of an economy with 401(k) plans. We use the model to establish a benchmark for patterns of contributions and participation and show how these patterns depends on such features as employer matching, vesting policies, and the availability of plan loans. Consistent with empirical studies, the model predicts relatively low participation ...
متن کاملEnhancing 401(k) Value and Participation: Taking the Automatic Approach
This is especially true in smaller companies and those of fairly recent vintage because 401(k)s are likely to be the only retirement program offered in these organizations. But, even in large and old-line businesses in which traditional defined benefit (DB) pension plans remain common, it’s important for employees to take responsibility for their retirement planning and save for retirement in o...
